Here's a before and after story of transformation achieved through paints and canvas.
"Anyone Can Paint"
I am a firm believer of "Anyone can paint" school of thought only because I have seen the equivalent of 'two left feet' among my art groups master very complex techniques when no-one including themselves thought they could paint! So when Rebecca contacted us about taking private classes to help her learn to paint but she was worried as she had never painted in her life, we were thrilled.
We asked her what specifically she wanted to be able to do with a painting, and she said she wanted to be able to do something creative with her time, but she didn’t want to be stressed out about it. The problem was typical painting classes were unsuitable for her as she wanted to learn but in a way that was uncomplicated, fun and left her with a sense of achievement. Her personal challenge was also set of limiting beliefs that one needed to be naturally gifted with creativity to be able to paint.
Here’s the story of her creative journey and how we achieved transformations both in ability to paint as well as mindsets open to expressing oneself fearlessly through art.
Rebecca’s first challenge was fear that she had never painted before and didn’t think she has any natural talent for art. Through a serious of exploratory drawing and painting exercises we were able to achieve results and convince her that anyone can paint with a bit of practice and desire to create. By the end of 8 weeks she had learnt to paint in watercolors and draw concepts of choice. She was surprised and ecstatic that she could paint. With her progress, we were able to demonstrate that the fact that you have never painted before, can be considered as your strength. You won’t have to unlearn anything and your mind is a blank canvas presenting infinite possibilities.
While our client was now happy to have found a way to unwind and have fun, she wasn’t yet happy about her skills. The second challenge was fear of failure (read our blog on how fear of failure can impede creativity) and obsession with the final outcome of the painting. Over exploratory painting lessons with different mediums we were able to change her thinking to one of an art explorer. The biggest breakthrough came when in a mixed media exercise she discovered that ‘failures’ could be triggers for new ideas.
Once the fear was left behind, she quickly learnt to enjoy and trust the creative process leaving the final outcome to serendipity. She also found a new love in acrylic paints which as an art medium was more to her natural inclinations and style of painting.

At the end of a year, Rebecca had discovered that one doesn’t need to be of a certain age or have natural acumen in arts to be able to paint. She has now started having fun exploring art courses in variety of mediums as she continues to build her creative voice.
